Zilla kicks off 2018 with a killer new track. ‘Whatever It Is’ is the third in a series of releases from a bold new artist, working somewhere between the crunch of the avant garde and the joy of a good hook.

Whatever It Is’ takes a more menacing and provocative turn. “It’s a sensual love story with the voices living in my head, the temptation of letting go of sanity and surrendering to the crazy,” Zilla explains.

Whatever It Is’ is a nod to Zilla’s more hip hop leanings, with a moody, minimal beat, humming flow and an arresting chorus that features a layer of the “other”’s voice over her own.

Zilla’s idiosyncratic compositions are rooted in deeply personal experiences and constructed of samples from objects symbolic to her unique stories and events. On her latest outing, she used a toy horn with Mexican samples, a black velvet bag, a stone, duct tape, handcuffs and hair clips.

Produced by Matthew Herbert who has signed Zilla to his Accidental label for her first run of singles, Matthew says,  “I like the fact that Zilla can sit at a piano and bash out some Rachmaninov and Debussy, but chose instead to make an ahead-of-its-time record out of the ephemera of ordinary life. It bristles with the friction of real life as opposed to the comfort of the recording studio”.

With previous guest vocal appearances on tracks and remixes for labels such as Hypercolour and Warp Records as well as producers Luciano and Matthew Herbert, the hotly tipped vocalist and producer is now taking centre stage. These first set of releases provide an intriguing insight into her off-kilter nocturnal world in preparation for her full length debut album in Spring 2018.

There’s been radio support for ‘Get Your Way’ and ‘The Sleepwalker’ via BBC 6 Music (Nemone and Don Letts), BBC Radio 1 (Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart), Radio X (John Kennedy) and Amazing Radio (Charlie Ashcroft). Get Your Way’ was first used for Elle UK‘s highly successful #MoreWomen #ELLEFeminism  campaign.
